چکیده

We present a novel moving overset grid scheme for the accurate and efficient long-time simulation of an air bubble displacing a non-Newtonian fluid in the prototypical thin film device, the Hele–Shaw cell. We use a two-dimensional generalization of Darcy s law that accounts for shear thinning of a non-Newtonian fluid. In the limit of weak shear thinning, the pressure is found from a ladder of two linear elliptic boundary value problems, each to be solved in the whole fluid domain. A moving body fitted grid is used to resolve the flow near the interface, while most of the fluid domain is covered with a fixed Cartesian grid. Our use of body-conforming grids reduces grid anisotropy effects and allows the accurate modeling of boundary conditions. 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Mode-coupling approach to non-Newtonian Hele-Shaw flow.

The Saffman-Taylor viscous fingering problem is investigated for the displacement of a non-Newtonian fluid by a Newtonian one in a radial Hele-Shaw cell. We execute a mode-coupling approach to the problem and examine the morphology of the fluid-fluid interface in the weak shear limit. A differential equation describing the early nonlinear evolution of the interface modes is derived in detail. O...

Analysis of Transient Rivlin-Ericksen Fluid and Irreversibility of Exothermic Reactive Hydromagnetic Variable Viscosity

This study analyzes the unsteady Rivlin-Ericksen fluid and irreversibility of exponentially temperature dependent variable viscosity of hydromagnetic two-step exothermic chemical reactive flow along the channel axis with walls convective cooling. The non-Newtonian Hele-Shaw flow of Rivlin-Erickson fluid is driven by bimolecular chemical kinetic and unvarying pressure gradient. The reactive flui...

A diffuse-interface model for electrowetting drops in a Hele-Shaw cell

Electrowetting has recently been explored as a mechanism for moving small amounts of fluids in confined spaces. We propose a diffuse interface model for drop motion, due to electrowetting, in a Hele-Shaw geometry. In the limit of small interface thickness, asymptotic analysis shows the model is equivalent to Hele-Shaw flow with a voltagemodified Young-Laplace boundary condition on the free surf...

An Overset Adaptive Cartesian/Prism Grid Method for Moving Boundary Flow Problems

The use of overset grids in CFD started more than two decades ago, and has achieved tremendous success in handling complex geometries. In particular, overset grids have the advantage of avoiding grid remeshing when dealing with moving boundary flow problems. Traditionally overset grids were mainly used with structured grids to simplify the grid generation process, because a complex computationa...
